[comp.sys.mac] WriteNow 2.0 More Questions

czychi@ethz.UUCP (Gary Czychi) (01/28/89)

Lately I talked to T/Maker to find out solutions for the two problems I am
still having with WriteNow 2.0, but to no avail.

1) The 'date' format.
I carefully configured the appropriate system resource (with Apple's
"International" cdev and the "Simon" cdev from Frank Ng), but WriteNow 2.0
is still displaying and inserting a wrong date format.
i.e.: I want to have (and set the long date preference accordingly):
	"Freitag, 27. Januar 1989",
but WriteNow (and some other DAs/applications as well) cuts the day and
month name to four letters, which is very ugly:
	"Frei, 27. Janu 1989".
At least the short date format could be inserted instead from WriteNow.

T/Maker says that they will bring out an extra cdev in a couple of weeks
with which you can change the appearance of WNs date string (and code).

But that still leaves a question open:
Why does Apple undertake so much effort to create every kind of int*.*
resources to let the user adjust to every possible configuration, when
there seems to be no one (quite) who can take advantage of this??
It would be much better and much easier if T/Maker wouldn't develop an extra
cdev but implement i.e. just an additional choice for the user to select
between the long and the short date format.
(The real question is: What is it that makes it so difficult? The resources?
Apple? Lack of documentation?)

2) Curly quotes.
Great. WrieNow 2.0 is able to automatically insert the american curly quotes
when you press the 'generic' quotes key (Just the same as the Smart quotes
Init does).
Where I live however, the qoutes don't start at the top of the line (hex 22
["] or D2), they start at the bottom of the line (hex E3 [,,]) and are
ending at the top of the line (hex D2).

What I think WriteNow does, is the following: It looks for the generic ["]
charcter and inserts a hex D2/D3 instead. Assuming that, one should be able
to look somewhere in the algorhythm which accomplishes that and simply
change the D2/D3 quotes with the appropriate ones (which are E2/D2 in my
case).
Is this right? The persons at T/Maker to whom I spoke didn't know that or
thought that it wouldn't be possible >>for some reason, I don't know<<.
Instead they told me to exchange all those peticular characters in all my
fonts...
So here is my question to the Mac Wizs: Is it somehow possible to exchange
the quote characters within WriteNow?

I am using an US system 6.0.2 with the local (german, swiss german and
french) resources copied into it.

Thank you very much for your help.
