[comp.sys.mac] Is there a C++ for the Apple Macintosh?

domo@riddle.UUCP (Dominic Dunlop) (01/09/89)

Is there a C++ running under the native operating system on the Macintosh?
In order to be of use to me it has to run on and support the full Mac range
(within reason). (Oasys/Glockenspiel have C++ for A/UX on the Mac II, but
that's not what I'm after.) (Usual grovelling apology if this question has
recently been asked and answered...)

If you've an affirmative response, please post it to BOTH groups above,
although I'll summarise any mail that I get on the subject to the net if it
looks to be of widespread interest.

Thanks in advance.

I have heard through APDA (and other sources) that Apple is working on
a version of C++ for the mac (under MPW). It is supposed to provide
full toolbox support in the same manner as MacApp (their OO Pascal).
According to popular rumor, it is supposed to be released sometime
within the next 9 mos. If you need it imediately, it sounds like you
are SOL... Maybe contact Apple about being a beta site?

Apple is working on an MPW version of C++, but it is not available yet. I
don't know when it will be available.

This will be standard C++, with a couple of extensions to support the Mac
environment and MacApp. It will work with MPW 3.0, and will be available
from APDA (as are all our development tools).

A slightly different followup question: has anyone ported GNU C++ to
the Mac? Not that I really have much hope of running it on my Mac+,
but it would make a good cross-compiler ....

Apple was supposed to release C++ with MPW 3.0. It is not currently being
distributed with the Beta version of 3.0. The non-beta version should be
out Real Soon Now. However, the C++ release was originally being delayed
until AT&T released C++ 2.0 so it may not be released even when MPW 3.0
comes out.

I've heard no rumors on whether LightSpeed C will implement C++... There is
a compiler tool called MacYACC which claims it includes a C++ to C translator
(as an example!) but I've no idea how well it performs.

Does anyone know the current status of AT&T C++ 2.0 or MPW C++???

I've been led to believe that MPW 3.0 has a C++ preprocessor that comes along
with MPW C. You'll also like it because it allows complete access to the
Mac toolbox and MPW is a "Unix" style shell with pipes, redirection of
input/output and shell scripts.

  Hope this helps.

Yes. Apple will release a C++ for MPW 3.0, eventually. No word on when.

I have just received the Winter 1989 APDAlog. On page 17 in an article by
Steve Burbeck it states:

"The next important landmark for MacApp is support for programming
in C++. ....But, C++ will soon be availible from Apple. Current
plans are for release 2.1 to provide the ability for code written
in C++ to interact directly with MacApp."

Anybody have any idea when any of this will happen?

Randy Battat of Apple is quoted in the EE Times as saying that Apple's
C++ will be released as soon as AT&T releases C++ V2.0.

My question is when is C++ 2.0 coming out?????

Real Soon Now, ParcPlace (of Smalltalk fame) will be putting out a
full development environment for C++, called Cynergy. If you're
interested, I'll send you the info I just recently got from them.

This system is in Smalltalk-80, I think. It was mentioned in
comp.lang.smalltalk, if you are interested under the thread "Smalltalk
vs. C++"

I am not sure whether they compile this down in some way or not (I don't think so, but I am not sure), but if you need their ST-80 to run it, that's a major investment in resources and effort.

For my moneyt, Digitalk's SmallTalk/V Mac is a much more "Mac-y" system.
