[comp.sys.mac] Backup Programs

) (01/27/89)

I've had my fill of HFS Backup v3.0, and am looking for a replacement.
Specifically, what gripes me about HFSB is :

1. When backing up, you must put the floppy in the drive *it wants* (internal
or external). This is insane on a volume-name based system.

2. If you put the floppy in the external drive, it ejects first time, every
time, and then accepts it the second time. Internal drive works OK.

3. Problems with backup file sets (like not recognizing its own backup
directory on "Backup #1").

Anyway, I'm interested in a program that can :

1. Make full use of internal/external floppies, i.e. stick the disk in either
and it works.

2. Has a good, graphical way to select files to be backed up, along with easy
file filtering.

3. Overwrite or Archive "changes" in the backup volumes.

How about Diskfit? I hear good things about that.

Any responses appreciated! I'll post a summary if warranted.

My system: MAC SE, System 6.0.2, Internal floppy/HD20, External Cutting Edge
800K floppy.

Thanks - Rich

Rich, what you want is Redux, from Microseeds Publishing, Inc.
It can be very simple to use, or you can write scripts to have it be
selective about what it backs up. You could, for example, just back
up only documents (no applications) of type "LYLE" whose names begin
with "G" and are older than 1 week and are in folder...etc.
You get the idea. You can write a script and have a novice use it
as a default. The program displays (and can print) a beautiful
heirarchical diagram of folders and files; you can check off which ones
you want to back up in addition to the aforementioned scripting. And
there are lots of other things you can configure, like whether you want
the program to ask you about erasing disks, automatically select inserted
disks, etc. You can preserve the entire folder structure of your hard
disk if you are backing up to something that can hold everthing (like
a tape, another hard disk, or [drool, drool] a magneto-optical disk).
In that case, everything is readable as-is. Plug and play.
The manual is outstanding, and gives insights into backup
strategies (how many backup sets, daily plus weekly backups, etc).

The program doesn't care which disk drive you stick the disks into.
At least on my Mac Plus with Apple external drive. That really
can save a LOT of time if you have two drives. Redux is fast, and will
overwrite previous versions of updated files. I have been using the same
three boxes of disks since I got the program at work. I also bought
Redux for myself, but still need to get 75 disks (Redux will tell you
in advance how many you will need. You can uncheck things until you
get down to how many disks you have, if you have to).

This is such a great program at what it does, I actually _like_ using
it. I also have Fast Back but never use it.
