[comp.sys.mac] Changing MACII screen depth

dce@stan.UUCP (David Elliott) (01/31/89)

In previous articles, it has been suggested that the FKEY "switcheroo"
can be used to change the screen depth (number of colors) on a MacII.
I suggested that this could be done using MacroMaker (or Tempo or
AutoMac or QuickKeys or ...).

It definitely is possible with MacroMaker. I now have F11 set the
screen to black&white and shift-F11 set it to 16 grays.

All you do is start MacroMaker recording, call up Control Panel, select
Monitors, select the setup you want, close Control Panel, and stop
MacroMaker. I set these up as global macros.

There are some potential problems:

1. The DA menu may change. I actually removed some DAs that were in
the menu before Control Panel and MacroMaker was able to handle it,
even though the documentation (which is pretty poor in the first
place) says that MM is position-sensitive. The fact that I had no
trouble could be a result of the fact that I only have one DA
installed (Control Panel) and all the rest are handled by Suitcase,
but I suspect that MM knows more than is documented.

2. The CDEV menu may change. I use ChooseCDEV (freeware) to force
Monitors to be the first on the list. I have seen other people
change their CDEV names to have numbers first (i.e., 1.Monitors,
2.Pyro, etc.). In any case, MM is definitely sensitive to CDEV
   placement.

I believe that the other macro facilities mentioned above can be
configured to get around these problems. MacroMaker is not
particularly smart.

3. Make sure you are very explicit with selections. Make sure you
click on all of the icons, radio buttons, and selections that are
involved. This may save some headaches in the future.

NOTE: I have no beef with the author of Switcheroo, and it may well be
a more attractive solution (the MM solution brings up Control Panel
on the screen). I simply point out that powerful facilities exist
   to do this job.
