Last night I saw David Thomas, pere ubu singer, in a really charming show in boikley... I was expecting something like Bryan Ferry's solo stuff, (roxy without roxy) (pere ubu without pere ubu) but was startled and very pleasantly suprised to find my favorite pear-shaped object backed only by reeds and percussion; He has a real gift for stand-up comedy and is a consummate showman; as he said at one point, big things can be graceful too... The frenetic comusicians were very impressive, the 'thing whapping person' played all manner of percussive devices, including his monitor, with utterly controlled abandon; and d.t. himself was hilarious and amazing. If I could sing like that I might not even mind having to talk like that. If I could write or rap like that I wouldn't be posting poems to net.mary.hauk, you betcha... Anyway, if you like pere ubu, or you like absurdist poetry, or you like extremely witty, finely polished inanity, AND he comes around, go see this show. The pear shaped object is a genius.
