I am sorry to report that the Virtual product from Connectix, the virtual memory INIT, DOES NOT WORK with the SuperMac DataFrame XP60 currently. I have spent a few hours talking to Virtual's author the last couple of days, and it looks like SuperMac's non-standard SCSI calls are interfering with the way Virtual expects to operate. SuperMac people, if this isn't quite accurate, please bear with me, as what's relevant here is that the XP's drivers etc. are what seem to be at the root of the problem. If you've been using Virtual with an XP, please e-mail me; it's possible the problems haven't shown up yet, but your information may also provide leads for getting the problem solved! Jon Garber (the author) did tell me, though, that the program is doing quite well otherwise, and just about everyone is happy with the product. Yes, that's a biased opinion, but he told me that at the same time that he told me about the problems with the DataFrame, which makes it more believeable. He is also looking into problems running FullWrite Professional under his Virtual system. Anyone using FullWrite and/or DataFrame drives may want to wait before buying Virtual! Jon plans to have fixes for both problems within the next several days. I will inform the net as things progress. I have to say that I'm really impressed with Connectix's operations. They are a small company who have been bending over backwards to help a small customer. They return calls (Jon even made me hang up so he could call me back on his nickel, rather than waste mine), answer questions openly and honestly, and they seem to have a great product that I'm just not being very lucky with! Disclaimer: I am not affiliated in any way with Connectix, Ashton-Tate, or SuperMac, except as a satisfied customer of the second and third, and soon, I hope, of the first! :-) Another Disclaimer: This is all on my own, personal, Mac II; it has nothing to do with my department, which doesn't know I'm saying these things, and wouldn't understand them if they did. -- Mark H.
