On a lighter note than my previous posting: My schools engineering department is interested in having a computer lab for CAD/CAE purposes. We're considering the Mac line, and the new Apollo and Sun systems. We already have an Apollo on order for a project they're sponsoring, but the general feeling is that a line of integrated Macs would be better for the students since they're easy to use and run other useful software we will need for these projects. They're also the most popular PC on campus, beating out the IBM's by more than 2:1 However we expect this to be a very costly venture, since we'd like about a dozen stations, and two or more laser printers to go with them. The cost is expected to be high enough that we're not willing to put up the entire cost on our own (there are only 525 students here, we're not THAT rich), and are already applying for research grants to fund the lab. Currently we expect to be purchasing the equipment Fall 1990, and having the lab working the following spring term. Is anyone interested in promoting their products? Single unit software would be useful in almost any area related to engineering, and general use software would be useful as well. What we like and use will probably go up for a site license. Harware would also be useful. Is Apple willing to donate a IIx system (provided a solution to the software problem can be found first)? Big screen donations would also be nice if anyone out there is interested. External hard drives in the 100+MB range would be almost essential, but smaller sizes will receive their fair shot. If your company might be interested in donating, send me e-mail, and I'll talk to the department chair and have him contact you to discuss the plans for the lab. Thanks "What do you mean the backups haven't been done for a month?" Sunil -Faustus Majoris -Devious Bastard
