THE BIG BUG IS FOUND For everyone who's experienced chronic crashes when using GateKeeper in the Control Panel there's good news: The problem has been found, it's been fixed and you don't have to wait for the fix. The problem was not a bug in GateKeeper - it was an incompatibility between GateKeeper and the versions of the Control Panel distributed with systems prior to 6.0. The details are tedious, but it suffices to say that old versions of the Control Panel closed things down in a strange (and in this case troublesome) order. Evidently Apple was aware of the problem since it was fixed (i.e. not present) in the Control Panel distributed with System 6. This (as you've probably guessed) is why neither I nor my original testers ran into this problem - we were all using System 6.0.2. This is why it took me so long to find and fix the problem. The next version of GateKeeper will be compatible with the earlier versions of the Control Panel, but I strongly recommend upgrading to System 6.0.2 since it will not only "fix" the problem with the current release of GateKeeper, but it will permit you take advantage of some significant new features that will be found in the next version of GateKeeper. Please distribute this information as widely as possible - GateKeeper users across the world will thank you. ----Chris Johnson ----Author of GateKeeper ----chrisj@emx.utexas.edu Thanks to all my testers and everyone who sent me their bug reports for the aid and information, and particular thanks to Vahe Kassardjian for working with me so closely (and quickly) and corrupting his System file so many times in attempting to isolate this bug for me.
