The new multifinder that came with MPW 3.0beta has a neat "set aside" command in the apple menu which puts away all of the windows for the current program. I discovered by accident that if you click on another application's window with the option key down, it sets aside the current application while it switches.

The option key also changes the Set Aside command to a Set Aside Others command which sets aside everything but the current application. Suprisingly, though, if you select an open application from the Apple menu with the option key down, it does not set aside the current application as it switches. It seemed to me that that would have made sense in light of what you just said.
