[comp.sys.mac] Control Panel startup time

dce@stan.UUCP (David Elliott) (02/08/89)

When I posted a message about using MacroMaker to change the screen
depth on a MacII, I got a number of responses saying that having 12 or
more CDEVs in the system folder caused the control panel to take a long
time to start up (15 seconds with a fast disk was quoted).

I would assume that this is a function of system folder size and not of
the number of CDEVs, but even so, it takes an elapsed time of 3 seconds
to change the screen depth on my system, and my system folder is huge
(over 10 MB).

This speed seems to be due to hierDA or Suitcase (I haven't tried to
see which), and I would suspect the former more than the latter.
With hierDA, I pull down the DA menu, and when I drag onto Control
Panel, it shows me the available items instantly. This leads me
to believe that hierDA is caching the CDEV names. Otherwise, it
should take a long time to print the list.

Note that I have no connection with either of these products other than
being a very satisfied user of both.
