[comp.sys.mac] NetWork DiskFit and SuperMac

pgn@osupyr.mast.ohio-state.edu (Paul G. Nevai) (01/27/89)

About six months ago I bought a NetWork Diskfit. As opposed to its
claim it was unable to backup other drives via TOPs. I returned it
to SuperMac asking for my money back (this is promised in the
warranty). I haven't heard from them since then. This is despite my
at least three letters plus many phone calls.
They owe me $199 plus aggrevation!!!

Is SuperMac listening?

Anyone on the Net had similar experiences?

Well, I may now be an employee of a company that has a "friendly"
relationship with SuperMac, but I wasn't when I got two free updates
from them just for reporting a (very slight) bug in DiskFit 1.3...
They've ALWAYS been very helpful to me. I suspect your requests have
happened to fall on the wrong ears or have slipped through the cracks
somehow (I can't excuse it, but at least give them another chance).

Perhaps a call to their bigwigs would help. Steve Edelman (a (the?)
founder of SuperMac) is always being pictured in magazines these days
with a smile on his face. Maybe he likes being in the software
business and will give you some help?

To slightly reiterate: I REALLY DO RECOMMEND DiskFit and Network DiskFit
(we use them here at Apple). Any support problems you're having should
be brought to the attention to someone in high places a SuperMac
(e.g., Mr. Edelman). I hope they're interested in fixing your problem.

Hope this helps...

Paul,

Yes, I'm listening. Have you received by two replies to your E-Mail messages?
I've tried responding to your previous message, but the mailer at OSU returned
them. I've also tried sending you a reply via Werner Uhrig.

I've passed along a copy of your message to Kathy Williams in SuperMac Software
and should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to give her a call at
(408) 245-2202.

The problem may not have been with Diskfit...it is not possible to access System
files on remote disks via TOPS.

We use Network Diskfit to backup AppleShare servers over the network.
It's slow but works fine. You can backup to any mounted device so using
removable hard disks and (I suppose) WORMs is not a problem.

If the server has lots of files the Administrators machine must have alot
of memory.

But if you can't see your backup device in the finder, Diskfit wont see
it unless theyve written a driver for it. I'm particularly interested
in using the PCPC 2Gb tape unit for these excercises.

This is INCORRECT, NetWork Diskfit will indeed backup any remote volume over
TOP's with no problem. The only idiosyncracy is that TOP's isolates the System
file and will not back it up. DiskFit reports file not found.

I do not know what you were doing, but obviously you were doing something
wrong as I backup remote volumes all the time.....
