[comp.sys.mac] Virtual compatibility with XP60

mha@batcomputer.tn.cornell.edu (Mark H. Anbinder) (02/09/89)

A couple of weeks ago I posted the news that Virtual, the virtual memory
product from Connectix, did not work with the DataFrame XP60 hard drive
from SuperMac. Several days and several phone calls later, Jon Garber,
Virtual's author, managed to rewrite the program so that it DOES work with
SuperMac's drives.

I've been using the revised version of Virtual for almost a week now, and
I'm quite happy with it. It gives me an eight-meg virtual machine, whereas
I only have two megs of physical RAM. There's no question that the time
lag is noticeable when the program swaps the pages of memory on and off
the hard drive and in and out of RAM, but it's quite tolerable. Since the
SuperMac drive isn't particularly fast to begin with, users of most other
drives will find Virtual much speedier.

The new version of Virtual also fixes the incompatibility problem with
FullWrite. I don't know the specifics of that, since I couldn't get
Virtual to work at all before the new version, but I can attest that it
works just fine with FullWrite now.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about Virtual that you'd
like to ask a user, rather than the author or a tech support person. If
you want to call Connectix, their number is 415-324-0727. They're in
Menlo Park, CA, which meant I could call after dinner, and they'd still be
at work! :-)

I'm not affiliated in any way with Connectix, except as a HIGHLY satisfied
customer. The support on this product has been stellar -- it didn't work
on my system, so he fixed it. He gave me the option of getting my money
back, but I felt the working product would be worth the wait. I was right!
