[comp.sys.mac] write-protecting the trash?

flowers@lanai.cs.ucla.edu (02/06/89)

My 3 year-old has enjoys dragging file icons around to new places.
When I realized this, I told her they had to stay inside windows, and
she has been very good about this. However, I worry about something
getting dragged to the trash. At the moment I always hide the
trashcan behind something before letting her on ("Why are you moving
the trashcan?" "Nevermind, just don't do it yourself"), but I would be
a lot less nervous with more security. So...

Does anyone know how I could write-protect the trash can (or otherwise
protect the system from getting files deleted) ?

thanks,

There are two ways I know of. First is the Guard Dog CDEV which stops anyone
from moving the icons at all. The other is the DiskLock DA. It lets you
write protect the hard drive (or floppy). Therefore, icons can be moved
anywhere but on the next return to the Finder, the icons will be back in their
original places. It also stops files from being modified or deleted.

One of the things that is difficult to do in the "norm", is to
munge with the finder enough to write protect the trash can.

What it is much easier to do, however, is to stop the trash from
being emptied.

I have suggested this as an addition to MacPassword 3.x (still in beta)..
we shall see if it is feasable (ie: in Guest mode - disable trash
emptying).

I'll make sure that version 3.0 is posted to the binaries moderator
when it is done.
