I currently have system 6.0.2 running on my Mac SE. I also have Suitcase II. When I go into Suitcase II and look at the sound files available, they show: Simple Beep, Monkey, Boing, and Clink-Clank. These are the same as when I go into my control panel and go to the "Sound" panel. When I go into my Sound panel and test simple beep, it has the classic, "bright" beep sound of the Mac. HOWEVER, when I play the "simple beep" from the Suitcase II sound file I get a nicer, softer beep. I want to put this new "soft beep" in as my default system beep, but nothing I do (including renaming the beep sound in Suitcase II and re-booting) changes my System's beep sound! What am I doing wrong? Do I need some sort of sound moving application to change the system sound? Thanks for any help that you can provide. Jim Collymore

[...] I've had a similar problem. My only INITs are Tattle Tale and MacroMaker. This 'nice' beep seems to be the default after you initialize the parameter RAM (the only way I can get it back). From memory the following should get you the soft beep. The latest system looks to see if you have a Mac ][ or whatever and if you don't have an appropriate machine it just uses the old beep. This is because most people seem to think the new beep is dreadful on a Mac +, I agree. Anyway if you have Resedit, you'll need it, open the system and the 'snd' resource. Select 'Simple Beep' and get info, change the id number to something unique. Save the changes as you quit and then reselect simple beep from the sound cdev in the control panel. The new "softer" beep than now works on Plusses and SEs with System 6.0.2 is a snd resource. When you select Simple Beep in the Control Panel, it actuall plays a snd resource instead of invoking the standard "hard" beep. This hard beep is in the Mac ROMs, so unless you find some way of changing those, you can't change that beep, but all you have to do is select Simple Beep from the control panel and you'll get your beep. When you selected Simple Beep it played the hard beep. There was no way of getting it to play the soft one. I think someone has already posted the solution, and someone else mailed it to me. It involves a minor hack to the System file using ResEdit. See below. To make the other beep appear in the Control Panel: Duplicate the System file Open this copy from ResEdit Find the 'snd ' resource called 'simple beep' Duplicate that resource Change the duplicate's name to something else, like 'soft beep' Change its ID to 129 Quit from ResEdit, saving the changed copy of the System file Replace the System file with the changed copy. Thanks to someone called 'rich' who sent me some mail explaining this. David A.
