My internal 800K floppy drive bit the dust (the ol' head decapitation trick), and I thought I'd be clever and swap my Apple *external* floppy drive into my Mac to replace it. However, the drive doesn't seem to be able to read & write when connected internally (it is recognized, though). I was told that something needed to be fiddled with (two wires cut, I believe) in order for an external floppy drive to be used as an internal drive, and that there *might* have been an article on this in a past BMUG newsletter. Does anyone have any experience with this, or know the correct procedure? (This is on a 2 MB 512E w/SCSI & XPRAM, by the way.) Thanks a heap... -ken -- ========== ....... ============================================= Ken McLeod :. .: felix!dhw68k!thecloud@ics.uci.edu ========== :::.. ..::: InterNet: thecloud@dhw68k.cts.com //// =============================================

In replacing the 800k floppy, there may be some wires to cut. The problem can be noted by constant movement in the drive. The internal cables with the yellow stripe should have the wire cut or in many cases, the wire is actually missing. That is, the wire is solid plastic and has no wire in it. Also, it has nothing to do with the fact that you had an EXTERNAL drive but that there are different versions of the drive. Assuming you have the old cable, and your drive displays that symptom, you can cut the wires. Counting from the stripe, cut the 9th wire, and the very last wire. As far as I can remember, it is not necessary to reverse this if you go back to the other version drive. Good Luck.
