[comp.sys.mac] MACII 40MB drive is unaccessible...nobody home on SCSI...HELP!

bloomer@dspuv2.steinmetz (john bloomer) (02/03/89)

well my warrantee just expired. after a no-hassles shutdown, my
hard disk icon disappeared, along with any access to the device on
the SCSI port. i have tried disk first aid, hd set-up and everything
i can get my hands on - still no hard drive. i have even reseated the cables.

i looked inside at the LED, if it helps, here's what happens: during
boot, a steady light fads to a dimmer flashing (say 20 seconds or so).
this dim flashing continues for quote some time, i belive even till i
satisfy the 'insert disk ?' prompt and disappears as the system comes
up. the LED is off until i attempt to access the SCSI port, with for
example disk first aid. i immediately goes out to find the SCSI
device(s), but returns with a 'no suitible device on SCSI port' or
something like that.

can somebody help me please! what really ticks me off is that this
beast is only four months old. my literature says 90 days, then you're
on your own. i cannot even isolate the problem: i assume from the LED
behavior that the seagate SCSI interface is at least partially
functional, but is the problem there or on the initiator side.... i
have no fear of probing around at SCSI logic signals, but only as a
last resort.

i would REALLY appreciate some email on this one. i am in the middle
of trying to meet a deadline.... thanks ahead of time...

ps - of course only old stuff made its way to floppy. i guess it takes
an incident like this to change one's habits... wait till my wife
finds out all her college papers are in limbo...

You need to reset your PRAM. It requires that you hold down certain keys
and click on the control panel selection under file. Sorry I don't remember
which keys. You can call your local dealer & hopefuly get instructions
on how t reset your PRAM. When you get instructions, keep them handy,
it will probably happen again.

the the parameter RAM. All these things are described in TechNote #134:
"Hard Disk Medic & Booting Camp", written by Bo3b Johnson. This is a TN
I strongly recommend every HardDisk-owner.

I'm sorry, the first line was missing in my former letter:
To reset the ParameterRAM, hold down the Command-Option-Shift-keys while
opening the Control Panel. (Forgive me, I'm not a UNIX-freak..)

PS: Once again I recommend Mac TechNote #134 to all HD-owners.
