[comp.sys.mac] BinHex and StuffIt for Unix

barry@primerd.prime.com (02/24/89)

Are there Unix utilities, e.g for Sun 3, that perform the same
functions as BinHex and StuffIt? I've had a number of instances
where I've downloaded a .hqx file to my Mac II, only to find that
there is something wrong and the file can't be decoded properly.
I'd like to be able at least to do a correctness check before
sending the file down the 9600 baud link. Since a StuffIt archive
often contains a file with documentation, I'd like to be able to
extract such files and perhaps save the bother of downloading
something that isn't quite what I want.

If Unix sources for BinHex and StuffIt aren't available,
where can I find a description of the formats used by BinHex and
StuffIt? The BinHex source on Sumex is not much help because it
contains many instances of inline 68000 code.
