Hello; I'm writing my PhD thesis and I'm currently doing everything but typesetting (we have to use TeX(ture), the typesetting system) on a Mac. I like to get down to using one machine but the purchasing prise for TeX (approx. $600) is unfortunatly too expensive. I have however, heard about a public domain version floating around somewhere. Is that right and if, does anybody know where I can get hold of it. Any answer appreciated, and please reply to me personally (since I'm not a reliable news reader). Thanks. -rolf "Frustrations are inversly proportional to the size of the problem."

Here at the University of Texas one can buy the full package (including LaTeX) for $150.- Also, there is to my knowledge no such thing as a public domain/shareware version of TeX for the Mac. There does exist (or at least there used to exist) a public domain implementation of TeX called C-TeX; in fact I seem to remember they had their own netnews group. Also, I wouldn't be suprised to learn that someone is working on a GNU implementation too. If you find a public domain implementation and use it, let us know if its any good! Andy Trevorrow of Adelaide is putting finishing touches to a public-domain port he has done of TeX. it was done using Modula-2 under MPW and will be available shortly, so he tells me. i'm keen to get a copy for use on my Mac Plus, as are several other TeXxies here in the UK. i know it will be available in the TeX archive at Aston University and will probably make it to other TeX repositories like Heidelberg and SCORE. that's all i know at the moment. look out in UKTeX Digest and TeXhax Digest for further announcements. dave -- David Osborne Cripps Computing Centre, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK (Phone: +44 602 484848 x2064) JANET: d.osborne@uk.ac.nott.clan

with it? If so, I would LOVE to get a copy of it. Please let me know how. While I liked TeXtures (and while they have great support), I find it a bit expensive to pay $500 for a product essentially available in PD. /ivo
