[comp.sys.mac] screen dumps

paul@aucs.UUCP (03/26/87)

On my old 512K Mac with 64K roms, I can get a screen dumps into a
file by typing option-shift-3, even when a menu has been pulled down.
On my newer Mac Plus, if I type option-shift-3 while a menu is pulled
down, nothing happens until I close the menu, at which time a screen
dump is performed, but without the pulled down menu! I have tried
this on several Mac Plus' with the same result. Both of my Mac's are
running the same version of system/finder.

QUESTION: Is there anyway to get a screen dump with a menu pulled
           down?

Please send any messages to me direct. If I get any amazing revelations
I will summarize for the net. Thanks.

I just want to thank the people who replied to my request about getting
screen dumps on a Mac Plus with the menu pulled down. The new ROMs
apparently no longer allow it (a "feature"). The solution is the PD
desk accessory called Camera. It has a built-in timer that can be set
up to initiate a screen dump, to disk or printer, at any time once the
DA has been activated. Its in the INFO-MAC archives, but I do thank
the person who sent me a copy since I regrettably do not have access to
those archives.

Camera is great. Apple also distributed an official patch 12-18
months ago, but said the patch should be installed only in a boot
disk you use for taking screen dumps, not the boot disk you use
everyday.

Coupled with other stuff I heard, I think the change has something to
do with a bug fix for obscure interactions between the menu and other
(perhaps VBL) code.

Does anyone know of a DA, like camera, that will take a picture of
the screen while the mouse button is down on a Menu item?
Camera freezes my Mac Plus.

I'm trying to build a HyperCard tutorial and need screen dumps.

Thanks.

I don't know exactly what the bad interactions are, but it is
Camera's use of SysBeep that causes crashes during screen dumps
when menus are down in the newer systems. If you'd like to
continue using Camera for screen dumps you can either revert
to an older system (I'm told it works under 5.0) or you can
remove the SysBeeps and have it still work (for now) under the
current system. I suspect there may be some other no-no's
occurring at interupt level that may cause future breakage.
Anyway, to "fix" Camera (tested on SE and +), replace the
occurrences of 3F3C 0005 A9C8 with 4E71 4E71 4E71 using the
file editor of your choice. I believe there are three places
all within the same sector. Do this at your own risk, of course.
