Greetings- Our group is making the transition to the Mac from the DEC 11/73 and there is one particularly difficult part in that jump. I've grown accustomed to some basic tools like FILE DUMP and FILE COMPARE, to name a couple. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that could direct me to such tools on the Mac. Thanks, Bob Cent

One asked me how he could save a directory list to email it to a third party. I could only suggest a screen dump to a MacPaint file and then binhex, or capture a postscript print if a print catalog from a directory that was "view by name" and edit it with a text editor and strip out the postscript header etc, am I missing anything? It comes with a basic compliment of tools like DUMPFILE and COMPARE (the two you mention wanting). There's also a great script that builds on the COMPARE tool to give you a neat side-by-side visual compare capability. It's also (fairly) easy to write your own scripts or even your own tools. MPW isn't exactly the most Mac-ish environment in the world, but coming from the PDP world (RSX? RSTS?) you should be right at home... Claris Corp. | Michael R. I also think there's one which will sort the directory by folder (aka subdirectory) on HFS disks. It certainly seems a more elegant solution than screen dumps (shudder). As far as FILE COMPARE is concerned, there are several products which can diff text files. And there seems to be a trend on the part of word processor publishers to supply a facility to diff formatted WP documents, leave an audit trail of modification dates, etc. John Heckendorn /\ BMUG ARPA: bmug@garnet.berkeley.EDU A__A 1442A Walnut St., #62 BITNET: bmug@ucbgarnet |()| Berkeley, CA 94709 | | (415) 549-2684 | |

The package offers not only thw MPW shell, but Aztec's own UNIX-like shell. If you're a UNIX junkie, you'll find it very comfortable. Within the AZTEC shell, you'll find numerous (about 3 dozen) mostly UNIX-inspired utilities, like "diff" (file compare) and "hd" (hex dump). The whole thing is very well designed and documented, and the compiler is damn good. It's also dirt cheap - $65 without MPW, $99 with (from MacConnection).
