[comp.sys.mac] Do you really need Laser Prep?

gtww2z9z@umiami.miami.edu (Jason Gross) (03/05/89)

Ok, guys, here's the latest from the Stupid Question-Of-The-Month Club:

If you send a Laser Prep to your LW at the beginning of the day, is it
required by the LW to have the Laser Prep sent by everyone else? The
gist of all this is: We have some space problems on our floppy-based
Macs, and we could save about 24K if we knew fer shure that we don't need
the Laser Prep file if it's been sent to it already.

I've been using Macs for about two years now it this question has never
occurred to me. It seems logical enough, though.

Have a nice day.

As long as the printer isn't powered off, or crashed (remember, there's a
computer in there!), and you are all using the same LaserWriter/Laser Prep
versions, they don't need Laser Prep. It used to be possible (haven't tried
this in years) to have just LaserWriter on a disk - if Laser Prep is needed
and can't be found, the Mac will spit out the current system disk and ask for
a disk with Laser Prep on it. This used to work with the 3.1, 3.3, and 4.0
laser drivers...

No, it is not required ever again. You only have to initialize it. Here at
MMA, we don't have Laser Prep on the disks because of space limitations.

One problem we run into constantly, however, is making certain that our
watchperson has a disk with Laser Prep. Occasionally, we'll have midshipmen
who turn off the printer, the power will go out, or someone will use a
newer/older Laser driver and it will need to be re-prepped for all the others.

As long as you have a person around with the Prep for these dire emergencies,
you could take it off all user disks.

I don't use laser prep and I NEVER have problems with the laserwriter.
