I am using a Mac II as a dedicated TOPS server. Recently after adding a number of new users to the system, I started to encounter some unusual errors when trying to mount additional volumes onto client Macs. The error read "Can't mount - out of Finder Memory". After seeing this error in a number of different circomstances - I discovered that the out of Finder Memory was really occuring on the server due to the fact that too many files were already open. The Finder default is 40 open files. Is there an easy way to change this default. If the default is changed does it affect other applications I may want to run on the server.??? -- G. The way to fix this is to use Fedit to change the "number of open files" in the Mac's boot blocks. This number is multiplied by four before being used, so changing it from 10 ($0A) to 16 ($10) will give you another 24 files you can open simultaneously. The memory consumed by this is insignificant. (Thanks to Steve Brecher for this information, long forgotten by me until he posted it a week ago). Alexis Rosen alexis@ccnysci.uucp
