First of all, I'd like to thank all the people who responded to my request for info on where to get UNIX code for binhexing, and X- Y- or Z-modem. For those who are interested, you can get this kind of stuff from the Sumex archive at Stanford. Various people also responded to my question concerning e problems I have had in unbinhexing files obtained through the automated mail server at Rice, which can be used to get files from Sumex by those people who do not have FTP access to Sumex. Sadly, no suggestions worked, but thanks for the thought. I'm awaiting another listservice order, and if I have the same problem with it, I will follow the advice of a particularly intelligent netter, and post a 15-line binhex file I obtained from listservice, in hopes that someone smarter than I may solve the problem. Finally, several people requested info on how to use the automated mail server at rice, so here it is: You mail a list of commands to listserv@icsa.rice.edu, with one command on each line. a command can be $MAC IND which will mail the mac archive index to you, $MAC HELP which will mail a short help file to you, and $MAC GET filename, where filename is the complete path FROM THE MAC SUBDIRECTORY DOWN, but not including the mac subdirectory. For instance, I think /APP/ASLEDIT is a valie filename. The people who have installed this facility request that you not use it during working hours, otherwise it may have to be restricted or discontinue Basically this means that if you have fast mail access to Rice, send off an order to them soon after the end of working hours there. If you have slower access, you might want to mail orders at the beginning of the week. Some notes: you cannot order more than 256k in any one 24-hour period. My experience has been that the mail server responds very quickly with a confirmation of the order, but the files themselves are much slower in getting back to my site (up to a week), and many never show up at all. And, as I have mentioned, I have yet to successfully unbinhex one of these files. Hopefully, this is just an anomaly to do with my site. Final note: I have been told that putting anything in the subject line of the mail message will mess up the order, so don't do this. Hope this helps, Ken McDonald {...!ubc-cs!mcdonald@fornax.uucp}
