[net.music] Oh, well: commercial != crap

rpk@mit-vax.UUCP (12/13/83)

I hate the attitude that ``if it's commercial, it's not art.'' The Beatles
were EXTREMELY commercial, and a great of their stuff was certainly valid.
What about Steely Dan ? U2 ? The sin of music is to be boring. Let us be
a little more accurate in our terms:

Formularised or not ?
Actually popular or not ?
Trying to be popular or not ?
Going directly for a certain audience or not ?

For example:
   XTC: (n, n, y, n)
   U2: (n, y, n, n)
   Abba: (y, y, y, y)
   Ozzy: (y, y, y, y)
   Motley Crue: (y, n, n, y)
   Journey: (y, y, y, n)

There have been a lot of creative pop bands America that would sound just
fine on 60s radio, but they are not very popular. On the other hand, Asia
is rather ponderous and actually not that catchy, and (at least for a while)
they sell quite a bit.
