I thought I'd counteract the CMS horror stories with a story about a pleasant experience I just had. As you may know, Tempo II 1.0 from Affinity Microsystems and SUM 1.0 from Symantec are not compatible. Parts of SUM crash immediately if called when Tempo II is in the system (even if it is turned off). I read in a recent MacWEEK that Affinity has come out with an upgrade that fixes the problem. I called Affinity's 800 number and talked with a very pleasant and knowledgeable employee. He affirmed that the upgrade was available, and then warned me that Symantec was rumored to be coming out with an upgrade to SUM soon, and that Affinity didn't know whether their upgrade was compatible with the SUM upgrade. Did I still want to order it? Well, I don't plan on upgrading SUM any time soon, so I decided to go ahead. The Affinity employee then asked whether I wanted the upgrade on a disk with a System Folder on it or a disk with some supplementary utilities. Nice touch, I thought: offering the customer the choice of ease-of-use or features. Finally, he asked for my registration number. Naturally, I didn't have it right there, but he took my order anyway. The price? $8.00. Eight dollars. Some companies charge more than that for shipping alone. This degree of friendliness, knowledge, and attention to detail is rare in this industry. That's what I told this employee then, and that's what I'm telling you now. I have no connection with Affinity Microsystems other than as a satisfied customer. David D.
