[comp.sys.mac] Can PS/2 1M SIMMs be used in a Mac?

cmkuo@cs.utexas.edu (Chin-Ming Kuo) (03/07/89)

Probably this has been discussed before but back then I was using a
Plus and had no urge to get more memory.
I can get a real good deal on some 85ns 1M SIMMs for PS/2 (x9), thus I
am wondering can these SIMMs be used in a Mac? I know the speed is not
a problem, but what about the size of the board, the pin layout?
Another question is what to do to make best use of those extra parity
chips?
Any info will be appreciated.

From what I've heard, IBM and Mac SIMMs are exactly the same except that the
IBM ones have an extra chip on them. What I heard was that you shouldn't go
out looking for IBM ones because you have to pay for a extra chip. But, if
you can get a good deal, there's no reason why it won't work.

I don't work for the U, so don't yell at them if it doesn't work.

I've had 9-chip SIMMs in both my Mac Plus and my Mac SE/30, and it works
just fine. The Mac ignores that extra chip. As to the 85ns speed, that
shouldn't be any problem at all.
