[comp.sys.mac] Help me with BinHex 4.0

jtd@wdl1.UUCP (Jeffrey T DeMello) (03/08/89)

Being a novice 'downloader' of files I have a simple question:

I have downloaded files from comp.mac.binaries (i.e. SuperClock 3.1)
which were to be converted with BinHex 4.0.

I "saved" them to our VAX as a standard text file, downloaded them
to my Mac+, and converted them using BinHex 4.0.

My problem is that I get blank sheet icons with a corner folded over
and they are labeled with a ".sit" suffix.

HOW DO I GET RIDE OF THE ".sit" STUFF AND GET THE REAL FILES?

You need to get a hold of the program StuffIt (or similar name). The file you
refer to is compressed and you need to select the file with StuffIt
and choose "Extract".

The .sit at the end of the filename means that it is a "StuffIt" file.
Stuffit is used to compress files for UL and DL. To convert it, you
need the program, which can be found on most all mac boards (it also
includes a BinHex4.0 function). However, your description of the file
makes it sound like it should be a .pit file (PackIt) another type of
compressions program (StuffIt will Un-Pack files). If it says .sit,
yet appears as a generic document, the file may have been corrupted
during transfer, so you may want to check into this possibility as
well. Hope this helps.
