I've bought an ImageWriter LQ two weeks ago and I'm quiet satisfied about the print quality in High Quality Mode. But now I have to change the printer head because one needle doesn't like to fire. Therefore my question: - Has anybody some experience with LQ's (pros and cons) - Who is the original producer of the ImageWriter LQ - Is there any chance to buy ink ribbons for this printer on the free market and not at the next Apple deal Bernd Wild Net-Mail: BWILD%FIX@GERMANY.CSNET FZI Phone : +49-721-6909-78 Haid- & Neustr. 10-14 D-7500 Karlsruhe West Germany

Is anyone having problems with their ImageWriter LQ generating lines of print with the letters "squashed", that is smaller than the normal but without any gaps. The main logic board was replaced as a warranty repair but hasn't solved the problem. The problem occurs more than once on a typical page of text and is independent of the application with generated the text. Additionally, the proportional spaced fonts print out bold. I seem to remember someone else making this observation but never heard of a fix. Any suggestions on either topic would be greatly appreciated! Please send any replies to Whiteley-J@osu-20.ircc.ohio-state.edu. Thanks, Rob Whiteley

Since you don't mention anything about which fonts you are using,
the obvious first step is to make sure you have installed the
fonts which come with the LQ. If you read the manual, somewhere
it explains that the LQ uses (this is from memory, not rereading)
triple font sizes and scales them down. It also, if I recall
correctly, suggests that under some circumstances characters will
print too close together and you, the user, will have to insert
space to make up for it. Not a very good state of affairs, but
at least they warn you.

The main logic board was replaced as a warranty This is a problem caused by the original LQ driver. Check your version number. It should be dated July '88 or later. I am looking for a low cost alternative for high(er) quality output. The Imagewriter II's quality isn't good enough and the laser printers (even the non-postscript ones) cost a lot more than either the II or the LQ. I have heard that the early LQ/software was very bad. The application I have in mind is mainly printing letters/memorandum. But a small amount of Draw and Paint type stuff is also done. My question is whether or not the LQ works well enough to use in this type of environment. E-mail responses would be fine. Thanks, Ronald A. I'm looking for a program called "tn370", wich should make it possible to emulate a 3270 terminal on a TCP/IP connection. I would be very grateful if someone could send it to me. It has been on (this?) net some time ago, but I missed it. advTHANKSance

Hello there. Excuse me if this gets chewed, I'm not a real notes jockey. In any case ... look into the HP DeskJet as an output alternative. I borrowed one here from work one weekend and was _very_ impressed. It's quiet, at the least the same resolution as an IW (although I can't remember the exact dpi figures) and in some cases better if it uses its internal fonts. Prices in the U.S. should be pretty reasonable. It deserves a serious look. There are also very good drivers available, I forget by whom, I'll check in the next few days and e-mail the info to you. I'm speaking as a satisfied user of the product, not as an HP employee, and my opinions do not represent HP. good luck,
