[comp.sys.mac] Expanda Mac+ blues

twakeman@hpcea.CE.HP.COM (Teriann Wakeman) (03/15/89)

This is a plea for advice from any "Lonely Harts" experts.

I have a Mac+ with a recently repaired digital board, new 2.5 Megs of RAM,
80meg of hard disc {Jasmine 20 + Magic 60}. The Mac+ has "lonely Harts"
{vers A} ROMS installed.
I got the repaired digital board back last friday and placed it in the Mac
over the weekend.

HISTORY: early Mac+, with 20 Jasmine drive, sys 6.02 {inits:suitcase II,
Pyro, that shipped with suitcaseI,AntiToxin,Gardian, Bill the cat start up
screen, player startup & shutdown sounds}. Everything worked well together.
At MacWorld I purchased 2 Meg upgrade & Magic 60 drive from MacProducts USA,
to be delivered later.

RAM came first. RAM was DIPs with soldered pins protruding below SIMM board.
I broke an arm off one socket trying to mount SIMMs. Reassembled, I got
sadmac bad RAM codes for both 2.5 meg & 1 meg configs. I sent digital bord to
MacProducts to have them solder in new socket.

I got a phone call from MacProducts saying they replaced socket but board would
not address RAM beyond 1 Meg. I allowed them to fix the board. When it came
back, I set up the Mac+ with the old 20 meg as startup. The system crashed
when Bill the Cat appeared. I put in my master sys6.02 disc to boot but the
system crashed after a happy mac with a 0F002 code.

I borrowed my next door neighbor's grey Mac+ (1 Meg) & booted it with my
Jasmine 20. It booted fine & everything worked. It also booted from my master
system floppy.

I removed all the inits from the system folder & tried again with my mac+, the
60 Meg drive disconnected & it booted OK. By placing the inits back one by one,
I isolated the problem to Bill the Cat start up screen {mostly black}. I
replaced Bill with a startup screen that was mostly white & everything booted
OK. Adding the 60Meg drive to the system & everything booted OK. Floppys
mounted from both internal and external drives when booted from the hard drive.

I disconnected the hard disks from the Mac+ & tried to boot as a floppy:
happy mac followed by 0F002 sad Mac! I tried another floppy with a current
system..same thing. In a fit I opened up my floppy archives & tried to boot
with EVERY system from 2.1 to 6.02...no good. But it still boots from the hard
drives {either hard drive}.

Trying to run it from the hard drive I encountered :
  1. frequent system crashes, generally when I do something that is RAM intensive
2. finder copy crashes system when copying a large document (Bill sez Hyper-
card stack} but works fine with smaller copies.

3. NUPAINT hangs up when doing RAM intensive things {rotate large selections,
   write half a page of alpha chars}

4. Large font file gets corupted when I try to add another font.

ABOUT says 2.5 Meg available, sys about 256K & finder takes about 178K {from
my memory}

Antitoxin says no viruses involved.

I called MacProducts & was told by the hardware tech that I had a software
problem, and by their software tech support person that I had a hardware
problem {crashes from floppies when finder was tring to mount from multiple
discs & my having looked for viruses convienced him of this}. They got together
and blamed the problem on the "Lonely Harts" ROM. They want me too replace the
ROMS before they will admit that their repaired board has problems.

Any one out there have a second opinion???????

I am guessing that it is a RAM addressing or RAM problem.

BUT those **@#%!!! ROMs are giving me headaches when I switch between using
my Mac as a Hard drive system & floppy system.

Any arm chair trouble shooting appriciated.

forgot to mention, I also tried to reset the PRAM, by removing the batt. &
waiting 5+ minutes before replacing it.

It did not help my problem nor affect anything but the PRAM preserved settings.

sigh,
