[comp.sys.mac] Virtual now working on Mac IIx

mha@batcomputer.tn.cornell.edu (Mark H. Anbinder) (03/04/89)

Virtual, the virtual memory software from Connectix, is now available in
a separate version for the Macintosh IIx. Since no additional hardware
is needed, the software alone lists for $295.

The reason Virtual didn't work with the IIx in the past is that the
author used some of the PMMU calls available on the 68851 Paged Memory
Management Unit that are NOT implemented in the PMMU that's part of the
68030 chip.

The new version has just finished final testing and Connectix is all set
to sell you a copy!

Anyone who has questions about Virtual, for the IIx or the II, should
feel free to contact me. If I don't know the answer, I'll be happy to
call Jon Garber (the author) and find out.

Connectix can be reached at 415-324-0727.

I am not connected with Connectix except that I am an EXTREMELY happy
customer. I LOVE having 8 megs of RAM to run MultiFinder in! :-)

If Virtual works on the IIx then will it work on a II with the
Dove Marathon 030 chip? Or do you need the IIx ROMs?

Question arises: If Virtual works on the IIx now, will it also* work on the
SE/30? With one on the way, this just could be something to look at.....

What about accelerator-boards with an 68030? Will it work with these boards
too? I think it should be no problem, but I think a lot of people want to
know for sure...

Connectix is currently working with the major companies manufacturing
accelerator boards to ensure that Virtual WILL work on all of the ones
that "should" be compatible. As I understand it, there are two major
accelerators that work fine with Virtual, and a couple of others that
don't in varying degrees. I would suggest that you contact Connectix
directly to ask about your specific board. They can be reached at
415-324-0727.
