Apologies if this has been covered before ...
How do I change the Type and Creator of a file? For example, suppose
I've got a file whose Type is "TEXT" and whose Creator is "????", but
which is actually a correct instance of a file supported by a
specific application - one way to generate such a file is to download
a binary via Pacerlink. How do I set the Type and Creator of the
file to match what is normally used for the application, thereby
getting the appropriate icon to be displayed by Finder? Loading the
file into the application and saving into the same or a new file
works (Type and Creator get set) but is rather time consuming and a
bit cruder than I would expect for the Macintosh.
Thanks in advance
Barry

Here are three easy ways. Note that there are LOTS of others, these are just the three I use most often. 1. One of the options in the DeskZap desk accessory is Set File Attributes. This will allow you to change the file type/creator. DeskZap is a shareware utility. Other shareware desk acessories such as DiskTop or Disk Tools do the same thing. 2. Selecting an application/document in ResEdit and then selecting "Get Info" (command-I) will allow you to change the file type/creator. ResEdit is available from Apple Computer. 3. Choosing "Info Edit" in the MacTools application will allow you to change the file type/creator as well. MacTools is available as commercial software packaged with Copy II Mac from Central Point Software. Hope this information helps. You can set file and creator type using several utilities, including the DiskTop DA (highly recommended). But to bring up a larger point - Does anyone know of a utility that will batch change file and creator types? This goes to a problem that was asked on the net a few weeks ago. It would be very handy to point to a folder, or select a group of files, and change file and/or creator type all at once. If this doesn't exist, does any wiz out there want to be a hero and write one?

The best way is probably to use either DiskTop or DiskTools II (both commercial products, available everywhere). Among other things, they allow you to do a Get Info on any file and change the type, creator, and set various bits. There are also other utilities (Disk Ranger, I think, will do this) that allow you to globally change every instance of a type/creator combo on your disk to something else. I've just been informed that DiskTop (a great package from CE Software)
does what I want. Since I already own DiskTop, I'm all set. Since I'm
a regular DiskTop user I should have KNOWN that it could change the
file Type and Creator fields - color my face red.
Thanks for the replies.
