No way it would be under $1000. Look at how much the Next ended up costing. c) this box would blow away the rest of IBM's product line, and establish Mac as the dominant standard. It wouldn't be an Apple killer, but a PS/2 killer. Don't think IBM or Microsoft would be keen on that. Steve Levy's column apparently created enough problems that I saw a press release on the AP newswire on CompuServe yesterday saying that MacWorld wanted to make it clear that it was only an Aprils' Fools joke, and they regretted any confusion it may have created for Apple, IBM, or Microsoft. They interviewed Steven Levy, author of the infamous column, who said it was just a joke. Curiously, they also interviewed a dude at IBM, who said that IBM neither confirms nor denies reports about machines under development. So IBM couldn't even deny it! The part I can't figure out is that it says it's a Mac II clone. It may be the size of a Mac II, but it sure sounds like a Plus to me. I don't think it mentioned NuBus, but how can it support color? Maybe it's the size and price ($3500+) that makes it a Mac II clone. For that price, why wouldn't someone just buy a true Mac Plus (or 2)? Of course IBM won't say. Would you pass up a chance to halt Apple machine sales in their tracks, just by keeping your mouth shut, if you were Apple's biggest competitor???? IBM turns my stomach.
