I am having troble getting TIFF files created on an IBM using a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet scanner with Scanning Gallery software to work on a Macintosh. I transfer the TIFF file over to the Mac and change its file type to "TIFF" using ResEdit, but Touchup still will not load it! Has anyone had any experience with transferring TIFF files from IBMs to Macs? Thanks. -Jon Dunn jwd@iuvax.cs.indiana.edu

TIFF files come in two flavors, an Intel flavor and a Motorola flavor. The difference between the flavors in the arrangement of the bytes. I believe it is the Intel flavor that has the two bytes in each word arranged in the least significant byte followed by the most significant byte. The Motorola format is just the opposite. Since IBM's use Intel and Mac use Motorola there is a basic problem. A general TIFF reader should be able to handle either format and do the appropriate byte swapping if necessary. Most TIFF readers don't handle this. There is a converter shipped on Utilities disk of the Mac product that goes with the ScanJet if you have access to that. There is also a conversion program called SuperConvert from I believe Silicon Beach that is public domain that may do the job. If you have any further questions let me know. I'll ask my friend who knows all about these wierd things and let you know what he says. (BTW: I've used the HP Scanner on the Mac and there is a paint type program which can edit the same format TIFF files. What program are you wanting to use to edit/print/display the tiff files on mac?)

Just having a go at the TIFF specs.
The first two bytes contain "MM" ($4D4D) if the file has been written
by a real CPU, or "II" ($4949) if an Intel chip messed it up. :-)
The difference is in byte order within words and longwords.
And since most TIFF readers' programmers are just too lazy to put in
the twenty lines of code to allow for the difference...
