[comp.sys.mac] 512KE internal drive won't eject Sony's

daf@genrad.com (David A. Fagan) (03/18/89)

Greetins,
A friend of mine has a Mac 512KE with a flaky internal disk drive.
The drive refuses to eject Sony diskettes. Maxell - no problem, noname - no
problem, but Sony disks come out about 1/8'' and stick. I would think that
this is a prelude to the drive refusing to eject any disks, except that this
has been going on since last May, and the machine is used fairly constantly.

Has anyone else experienced this?, any solutions?, Any recommended
preventative maintenance?

Much obliged,

Yes! The symptoms you describe, if left untreated, will eventually
result in major damage to the upper drive head (I'm speaking from
experience here :-( ) According to a tech friend, the 512/512E Macs
have a certain amount of play in the disk drive mounting bracket, which
means that it's possible for the drive to be mounted slightly askew...and
certain disks will get stuck when you eject them. The solution is to
open up the Mac and re-mount the drive, taking care to align it correctly.
(Apparently, the internal floppy drive mounting brackets in later Macs
have much better tolerances and the "sticky eject" problem doesn't occur.)

As for your friend's drive's "preference" for Sony disks, I think you'll
find that the Maxell disks are thinner than Sonys. The "thicker" the disk,
the more chance it has of getting stuck. :-(

 Good luck...
