How do those MacII's have the neat desktop pictures? I have an SE and would like to do the same thing. Does anyone know how? Thanks, Jim O'Connor

On the SE, you can use Tim Maroney's BackDrop program to use MacPaint files as backgrounds. For the MacII, it's useful to have Giffer or PixelPaint, which allow you to create files with a PICT resource with ID=0 (also called Grayview files). The program DeskPICT! will make the file called StartupScreen, which is displayed at startup instead of the Welcome banner, in the system folder the desktop screen. For both, neat programs to use are Randomizer and SSSwitcher. I use Randomizer to change between 5 desktop pictures I like to use. It also works with startup sounds and beeps, and you can set up related sets of startup screens, backdrops, startup sounds, and beeps. -- David Elliott ...!pyramid!boulder!stan!dce "Splish splash, I was rakin' in the cash" -- Eno

There's an INIT called backdrop that's PD/ShareWare (I think), which does just that. It will either take the old format used for StartUpScreen's, or in Mac/ FullPaint format, and make it your standard background. It's available on 36.44.0.6 on info-mac/init(s?), and can be downloaded anonymously. Hope it helps, Brad Koehn, UW-Madison "Fly like an Emu!"

> How do those MacII's have the neat desktop pictures? I have an SE and would > like to do the same thing. Does anyone know how? I tried using a program written by Tim Maroney called Backdrop on my Mac II and it simply started and and shut itself down. Didn't change the background canvas at all. So I conclude that it's broken. Is there an uptodate version that works on Mac II's or is there a better INIT (I assume) that will work to set up arbitrary ScreenMaker or macPaint canvases?

For all of you who want this for a II, get a copy of deskpict from sumex it's in infomac/init/deskpict.hqx. All it needs is a pict res id 0 named DeskPicture in the system folder. Needless to say it works in color. It does take up some ram, so probably 2meg or more is preferable, but it will work on a 1meg machine. rob rdsesq@jessica.stanford.edu

Backdrop works on my Mac II so long as I am in 1-bit mode and not running MultiFinder.

This would have to work on Mac IIs by the way.

Someone has suggested a program called Backdrop. Never heard of it. However I have something which is just as nice, I suppose. It's called StartupDesk. It's a document which contains an INIT file that you paste (using ResEdit or the like) into your System's INIT resource area. This INIT will take the StartupScreen and use it as the desktop pattern instead of using the control panel's desktop pattern. I don't know if I can release it. Let me check. Write to me if you'd like a copy (and if I can legally send copies). I'm a little late on reading the news, so somebody has probably pointed this out already: Backdrop DOES NOT work on a MacII!!! This has been posted here MANY times by the author (Tim Maroney), and he'd probably tell you again, but I'm sure he wants to save his fingers for typing things other than "Backdrop doesn't work on MacII", "Backdrop doesn't work on MacII"......
