[comp.sys.mac] Font Problems on 6.0.2 on MacPlus

doug@zaphod.prime.com (03/22/89)

I have a strange problem on our MacPlus at home. After we upgraded to
System 6.0.2 (I think this also happened with 6.0(.1?)) Hypercard no
longer worked. After I while I tracked this down to some fonts. Once the
fonts were removed Hypercard worked fine. Here's the problem. When I
open any of a number of fonts with Font/DA Mover, or attempt to examine
them with ResEdit the Mac either hangs, or starts having video problems.
Sometimes it'll come back with strange font info, most of the time not.
This happens with fonts that used to be just fine, and it happens when
the Mac is booted from a floppy with a fresh system (we're normally using
a 30Mb Warp drive). I recently got some fresh copies of some fonts and it
happens with those as well (so it's not a corruption problem).

I'm using F/DA Mover v3.8 which came with System 6.0.2 and we don't
have enough memory to run Multifinder with many applications. I'm
quite confused, it would seem to be an incompatibility between the
ROM routines in our Plus and 6.0.2. MacEnvy reports that our ROM is
the 'Lonely Heiffer' rev. Does this mean anything to anyone on the net
(at Apple?).

I find this whole thing somewhat disturbing. I work for a company which is
still supporting a 14 year old machine (P300) of which several still exist.
Our Plus is only 3 years old.

I've seen this caused by font files with bad resource maps, e.g. those
from Adobe. The problem is in the purchased disks so installing fresh
copies won't help. Get a copy of Font Harmony from the Suitcase II
package and use it to fix your font files.
