[comp.sys.mac] Your Favorite Shareware

robin@csuchico.uucp (Robin Goldstone) (03/18/89)

Hi all,

This month's MacWorld came with a catalog for shareware from EDUCORP
Computer Services. I am interested in ordering some of their disks.
Before I do, however, I thought I'd see what shareware programs people
find useful. I know of some I hear about such as BinHex and Stuffit
(ok some of this stuff is 'freeware' really). I am interested in
anything you think is useful utilities, DA's, stackware, inits, etc.
My skill level is advanced user, beginning Hypercard developer, 'wannabe'
programmer.

The question is, do you really want to order from EduCorp, when there are other sources that charge less, and get permission of the shareware authors, and dedicate their income to non-profit purposes, and fill disks "to the brim", and thoroughly check for updates and virii and system SW compatability?

And why not just FTP the files from any of the numerous Mac archives out there?

It's worse than that. In the most recent addition to their catalog, I was
surprised to discover my game Theldrow in it. Now, as an opening screen it
says that this software is copyrighted. In the online help is the details
of the licensing, which basically states that you can not charge and make
money to distribute it - which is exactly what they do. And they can't say
that they never ran it, since there was a screen snapshot in there. So it
seems that they can't read (I set up the copyright specifically with people
like this in mind).

Needless to say, I called them up. "Didn't we ask you permission to use
your software? Oh, we usually try to." I had them pull it from their disks
(the manager made is sound like this is a not uncommon occurance). Makes
you wonder about "EDUCOMP warrents that disks contain the listed items".
They also listed it as shareware (which it isn't), so comparing it to
"commercial games costing many times more" doesn't mean much (unless they
mean how much is is costing you to get it from THEM).

(BTW, I should be posting version 2.2 this weekend, but alas, I haven't
finished the second scenario, and I'll post that separately when I do)

To those who replied to my posting about ordering from EDUCORP:

Thanks for filling me in about EDUCORP. I had know way of knowing
about how these people do business, but now that I do I will not
order from them.

Regarding Raines Cohen's suggestion:

>>And why not just FTP the files from any of the numerous Mac
>>archives out there?

Because my site does not have FTP capabilities! However, once I get
a copy of BinHex and Stuffit hopefully I will be able to download
some goos stuff from usenet...
