Really? I would consider it violently unpleasant for ANY program to
write to a configuration PROM in any device without an explicit
request from the user. You should specifically have to invoke
a configuration program, which would get ready to do so and then
ask the user "Do you want to make this the permanent configuration
of you whatzit?" and wait for confirmation.

Really? When I tried using a Mac, I typically had to reboot every 5 
minutes. After a while I decided that the Mac wasn't ready for prime time.
(That was 2 1/2 years ago - maybe it is now.) I don't know exactly
why it bombed so often - the editor I had to use, the Absoft Fortran
, the Appletalk network (Prime Suspect!), whatever - but it did.
