[comp.sys.mac] LaCie Troubles

hellerst@husc4.HARVARD.EDU (Joe Hellerstein) (03/22/89)

I just had my second LaCie Cirrus 30 hard drive break in the space of two
months. I say break, because it didn't just crash, it now can no longer
be re-initialized. Last time, they replaced the drive and the controller
card. This time, the problem appears to be the controller card, although
it remains to be seen.
The darn thing broke 5 days before the 1 year warranty was to expire,
so at least it won't cost me to repair. I asked for my money back instead
of a repair, but they said that it was "impossible." Ha. I intend to write
a letter to them expressing my disappoinment. Ha again.
After hearing so many good things here about LaCie, I figured that my
first breakdown was a fluke. Now I wonder about their quality control.
Suffice it to say that if I had to choose again, I might get a Jasmine or
something.
I should remark, I guess, that they've been awfully nice about the
warranty service. It's just a big pain to have your disk crashing every month,
if you know what I mean.

Don't forget to back up your data..... Nobody's safe out there.

The trouble is, there seem to be bad runs of disks; retail sellers package
'generic' drives made by the names you've heard about, and certain
production runs of each manufacturer seem to have trouble, looking
over the history of the last couple of years.

As an example, the Rodime drive (fine Scots quality) in my MacBottom
bellied up 3 times. Each time, replaced with new Rodime. The last
time, PCPC apologetically put in a Seagate. 0 problems with that.
And I know Seagates of other vintagehave bad rep in the same way.

I think your last comment is the important one. Both LaCie and PCPC
seem to be very good about their warranties, and nice. This is good
service, with products that current mfg. tech. can't seem always to get
right.
