I have a problem when I try to unbinhex and unstuff files that I have downloaded from comp.binaries.mac on my unix system. The files transfer okay. They seem to unbinhex okay, and they seem to unstuff okay. The problem is that everything I download with type 'APPL' does not have a unique icon. It has the generic icon of the page with the folded down corner. I also cannot launch any of these applications. I once rebuilt the desktop and it changed some of the icons and let me launch the applications. Sometimes it creates a unique icon for the first thing I unstuffed after I unstuff the second. My system is a 2.5M MacPlus with System 6.0.2 and the latest finder. I have a Jasmine 100M HD that has about 36M on it. My latest attempt to rebuild the desktop did not help. If anyone has a clue to what is causing the problem please e-mail me. Thanks to all! Todd

Uncheck "Allow Background Tasks" under "Preferences..." or always unstuff files into closed folders. (So that the file is not visible to the Finder until StuffIt is done with it.) What is happening is that the Bundle Bit of the applications is not getting set correctly because of an interaction between the Finder and StuffIt. The same thing can happen when downloading MacBinary files with the Bundle Bit set. earleh:xyzzy:32768:7:Earle R. Horton,,,6434109:/hackers/earleh:/bin/rn

Horton,,,6434109:/hackers/earleh:/bin/rn These problems only occur under MultiFinder. These problems should not occur under the Finder. People who do not use MultiFinder very often (like me) do not run into these problems. -Michael -- Michael Niehaus UUCP: <backbones>!{iuvax,pur-ee}!bsu-cs!mithomas Apple Student Rep ARPA: mithomas@bsu-cs.bsu.edu Ball State University AppleLink: ST0374 (from UUCP: st0374@applelink.apple.com)
