[comp.sys.mac] Zoom 2400 modem - summary

lim@prls.UUCP (Fredric Lim) (04/06/89)

Thank you everyone who responded to my request concerning the Zoom
Technologies' MX 2400 baud modem for $139. In general, people seem to like
the modem. Two people who had problems attributed it to noisy phone lines
while one person said it dialed too slowly. The communication software
it comes with is junk. Mark Anbinder writes that an Anchor modem costs
$130-140 and has a 5 year warranty. The Zoom modem has a two year
warranty and the cable costs an additional $19. The shipping and
handling are free. Edited responses I received follows:

Pablo Fernicola writes:
"I bought one for my Mac last October/November and it has been working great. I
also bought an internal one for my dad's PC and it's also working okay."

Richard Davis writes:
"I bought one of those ZOOM modems when I got the same offer in December. It
is a piece of TRASH!!! Sorry, but I have a Hayes 2400 as well, and there is
simply no comparison in the noise suppression of the two modems. The ZOOM
modem is completely unuseable on a line that is completely acceptable for
the Hayes modem."

Robin writes:
"I just got this in the mail too. The ZOOM modem is identical to a modem I
bought at MacWorld from ??? for $129 except that mine just says 2400 where
it says ZOOM on the top right corner of the modem. I have had the modem
for several months with no problems. The price I paid was a show sepcial -
I think $139 is a reasonable price for this modem."

Dan Canfield writes:
"I read your request on readnews for info on the zoom modem. I bought one
about 6 months ago and have been using it with a Mac II ever since. I have
nothing but good to say about it. I haven't had a single problem with it."

Tom Cole writes:
"price, and it serves me well. It was pretty unreliable at my old home,
and I was in fact planning to sell it. However, when I moved, I must
be in an area with a more updated phone switching station, or something,
because now it works like a champ."

Josh Akselrod writes:
"The Zoom modem is not worth the money they charge - I have one of those
babies I picked up for $99 and though it works, it has a hard time
connecting (usually need 2 or 3 tries), and dials rather slowly (no, you
can't speed it up by changing the register settings)."

Robert Hughes writes:
"I bought one about a month ago. I checked on some old talk about it on the Well
first and people who bought it seem to like it. It is also sold under the name
Magic Modem 2400 for $129, by MacProducts USA 1-800-MAC-DISK. I'm quite happy
with mine in fact it seems to operate better in some modes than my apple 1200."
