This is a thankyou note to Supermac for the consistent fine job on updating their Dataframe utilities software. And for seeing that it is widely distributed. Diskfit 1.5 is a real joy--the speed is much improved and it is an extremely robust program, and has good on-line documentation and set of options. THE best backup software for those who have no need for true incremental backups. I've just finished testing and torturing the new Manager (vers. 4.0), and it is also first rate. It has also saved me from making an investment in partitioning software, which was high on my list of desired acquisitions. I backed up my XP60, reinitialized it, and then Manager allows me to create partitions (called "Drawers" for some silly reason, probably legal department paranoia). I created four--one 20Meg for the boot disk and everyday applications and utilities; one 20Meg for rarely used applications, manuals, and stacks, password protected; one 20Meg for documents, old and in progress, password protected; one 3Meg DES encrypted for insurance records, credit card numbers, and such. Narry a hitch, and Diskexpress (an extremely robust compactor by another fine software developer, AlSoft) has no problem doing its thing. Note that the partitions are hard, so you have to plan ahead as to sizes. My main problem with Drawers are the ugly icon with which they are provided. Gotta change them ASAP. Why not just use the nifty DF icon you get with an unpartitioned disk? For those with Dataframes or about to acquire one, the latest utilities are in directory /info-mac/util/dataframe on sumex-aim. Only thing is, the stuffit archive with the Manager appears to come sans ManagerCDEV (for mounting and altering Drawers). Would some kind sole place it there? The readme file should also be grabbed by anyone needing Manager, as it has enough documentation to get you going. ---------- Jeffrey D.
