... hearing that giffer (v1.03) was alive and well i just downloaded it from hubcap.clemson.edu. giffer v1.03 is still buggy! in particular, using system 6.0.2 etc. with no inits, giffer1.03 was launched. it loaded and closed a long (~25) sequence of GIF's with no problem. okay, but the only reason i still have giffer is that visionlab lacks one feature that giffer has: the ability to arbitrarily re-size an image. giffer1.03 was used to open a picture (320x240 256 color) of abe lincoln. the picture was expanded to 640x480 and "memorized" apparently without a problem. The expanded picture could be saved in PICT file format but giffer bombed when the expanded file was attempted to be saved in the GIF format! smaller size images were successfully saved in GIF format. other problems were encountered, for example, attempting to save a file in either PICT or GIF format and then "cancel"ling out of the dialog resulted in a schizoid image being dsiplayed in the image window. the schizoid image consisted of the left-half of the original image being displayed in its proper place and also being displayed in the right-half of the image window. "Out of memory" problems were encountered even though i'm running with 5M and no cache. giffer, itself, reported ~4.7M free when asked just after being opened. however, after opening a small image giffer reported only ~100k free! the error reported by MacsBug after giffer bombed was one of: Bus Error at MoveHHi ... or Bus Error at DragControl ... i'm hoping that visionlab will incorporate the arbitrary resize feature in its next version since it generally appears to robust. let's hope that giffer2.0 (i.e. i think a major rewrite is in order since v1.0, v1.01 and v1.03 have been buggy) can live up to its promise. -dave- hairston@henry.ece.cmu.edu ps: my mac is a macII, in case this was in question.
