[comp.sys.mac] more DiskFit/Hypertape questions

sdy@ssc-vax.UUCP (Ugly Bag of Mostly Water) (04/11/89)

ok, I finally got to play with my hypertape this weekend and it seems to work
fine with DiskFit 1.4 (using the DataStream driver and DataForm) except when I
was backing up to tape it tried to write when the tape was full and instead of
asking for a new tape for the smartset it told me to eject and then insert tape
#1. When I did so it rescanned and tried to write again, noticed that the tape
was full and failed when trying to update the smartset info. I've never seen
this happen when I backed up to disk, is this normal? Having only 1 tape
I didn't pursue this any further.

Which brings me to another question -- I've been patiently waiting for my
DiskFit 1.5 upgrade announcement, was every registered owner supposed to get
one? Does anyone know if 1.5 will ignore MultiDisk partitions just like the
HDpartitions were ignored?

Another nit is that when I tried to format my tape using DataForm it got to the
initialization portion and seemingly hung -- no light no movement just the
initializing message. Any mouse click spun it for a second and then quit -- I
finally ejected, quit, and restarted and then just initialized the tape since
it had already finished the format. If it makes a difference it was a
preformatted tape.

And lastly where do people purchace their DC2000 tapes and what kind of prices
do you pay -- they seem to be $20-$25 locally.

Oh this is on an 2meg, 512ke upgraded w/scsi port, cms 60meg external, running
release 5 (finder 6.0 system 4.2 ??).

Diskfit 1.5 is available. I received my network Diskfit 1.5 about a month
ago. A person that I work with received Diskfit 1.5 about the same time.

Tape operation was driving me crazy with 1.4 also. 1.5 seems to have no
problems with tapes. The tape driver now will format when you put in an
unformatted tape, so DataForm is not needed.

Steven,

DiskFit 1.5 does not automatically exclude MultiDisk partitions, but it does
exclude those invisible partition files from MacServe and SUM's HD Partition.
It will also exclude the CPSDeleteInfo file created by MacTools 7.2.

As for tape formatting/initializations, DataForm 1.0d is brain-dead, that's why
we released version 2.02 of the DataStream INIT for the SuperMac-brand 3M
DC2000 tape units and 2.02 of the ULDataStream INIT (available with DiskFit
1.5) for other 3M DC2000 tape units (Apple's Tape Backup 40SC & GCC's
HyperTape). All of the features of DataForm has been incorporated into the
2.02 INIT.

All registered owners of DiskFit 1.x were notified by a mailing during the last
week of December 1988 and later another mailing was done in March 1989. I also

posted a message on Usenet about the upgrade to 1.5 and the current status of
all SuperMac Software's products and version numbers.

If you haven't seen or received anything, have you moved or changed your
mailing address? Otherwise, call SuperMac (408-245-2202) and ask to be mailed
one of the upgrade notices.

Steve,

I forgot to mentioned the MINOR detail...the reason why DiskFit 1.5 doens't
automatically exclude MultiDisk partitions, is that MultiDisk was released
after 1.5 was frozen and thus we were not able to add the necessary information
to DiskFit's PAR# ID=130 resource.

If you OR anyone else needs to have this exclusion, please send you 1.5 master
diskettes to my attention here at SuperMac.
