Has anyone seen or played with the new Jasmine postscript printer? It looks soooooo sweet and I am interested in getting a printer for next year. What I'm really interested in is the print quality and how it handles complex postscript effects with text and graphics. But basically, anything that might help a prospective buyer. Also while the $3500 is attractive, its the one that is quoted in all the ads from Jasmine itslef. Does anyone know of any retailers that are selling it for considerably less? I expect there to be at least a couple. Muchas Gracias, Chris

What that means to you is most likely dependent upon how much of the Red Book you or any application are likely to throw at it... Just another consideration to keep in mind. Never mind that it won't print Adobe fonts; it won't print ANY of them, apparently. I suggest you arrange for a test drive with YOUR hard drive running YOUR software and downloading YOUR fonts. That's the only way I can see you making sure it works. Jasmine's in a lot of trouble; their hotline is just about ringing off the hook every day (still). I wouldn't expect great service from them until this Rodime thing cools off. --- Alex UUCP: {att,backbones}!ucbvax!qal.berkeley.edu!lauac INTERNET: lauac%qal.berkeley.edu@ucbvax.berkeley.edu FIDONET: Alex.Lau@bmug.fidonet.org (1:161/444)

I read something about it, one of them's suing the other, tales of corporate trickery, etc. What I want to know is: I bought a Jasmine DD 100 about two months ago, and I believe it has a Rodime in it. No problems at all...so far. Should I be concerned in any way? Robert ------ ra_robert@gsbacd.uchicago.edu ------ generic disclaimer: all my opinions are mine

I expect there to be at least a couple. Not likely: much of Jasmine's competitive pricing comes from the fact that they only sell direct (the local dealer agreed to get one for me only because AT&T does a lot of business through him). Originally J didn't even accept credit cards... =Ned Horvath=

Originally J didn't even >accept credit cards... > >=Ned Horvath= While this used to be true, at about the time the BackPack came out Jasmine started setting up dealer policies (I know because I enquired about them). The margins were a bit slim, but not abismal. This is why, as you'll notice, many of their current prices are not nearly as competitive as they used to be. This has happened to many similar outfits that discovered the benefit of a dealer network. Recently Hardware House went all the way and totally removed itself from the mail order business. Their products are now available through dealers under the label Maxess (sp?).
