[comp.sys.mac] Non-Conservation of Hard Disk Sectors

sarrel@dinghy.cis.ohio-state.edu (Marc Sarrel) (04/17/89)

I'm the proud owner of a DataFrame 20XP. I just downloaded the newest
SuperMac system software from Sumex (how's that for alliteration).
So, I put the new software on my drive, backed up with the new version
of diskfit, reinitialized (not updated) the disk and did a resotre.

Here's the interesting part:
				Disk Space (in Kilobytes)
before init	after init	after restore
Used 17788 32 16117
Free 2518 20194 4109
TOTAL 20306 20226 20226

I have three questions:

1) Where did the 80K that disapeared during the init go? I assume
that they were bad blocks that were taken out of service.

2) Why did exactly the same files take up 1671K less after the
restore? Mind you, I'm not complaining.

3) I've been crashing FullWrite quite often recently. I remove the
VM files regularly. But, I thought I noticed a decrease in the free
space even after I removed them. Does FWP have a history of "loosing"
disk space?

thanks,
marc
