[comp.sys.mac] GateKeeper News

A few points of interest to the GateKeeper users in our audience tonight:

* A maintenance release, version 1.1.1, will soon be available. It contains
nothing whatever of an exciting nature and if you've had no problems with
1.1, you probably don't have a pressing need for 1.1.1. On the other hand,
I've received reports from a few people (3) of GK suffering from a chronic
inability to remember it's privileges often accompanied by the privilege
list appearing empty or trashed. If this sounds familiar, you'll need
to get 1.1.1 - preliminary feedback from my testers seems to confirm that
this bug has, indeed, been fixed, so 1.1.1 should be ready real-soon-now.

For the moment, if GK doesn't seem to be able to remember its privileges
no matter what you do, I recommend replacing your copy of GK with a clean,
new and unused copy. You will, I'm afraid, have to rebuild the privilege
list when you do this, but since the whole problem is that the privilege list
is being corrupted, it wouldn't do you any good even if it was possible to
   move privileges between copies. Sorry.

* I've been in touch with the folks at Claris about the Internal Errors
generated by MacWrite and MacDraw II. They've informed me that the problems
are not present in MacWrite II 1.0 and MacDraw II 1.1, so I think we've
now seen the end of that.

If you are using the aformentioned programs and versions and you encounter
any strange interactions between them and GateKeeper, let me know and I'll
relay your reports to Claris. I have to complement Claris on how cooperative
they've been in dealing with these matters - thanks.

* A minor note on version 1.1.1: If you're tired of holding down the option
key to grant privileges to things like MPW tools, you'll be pleased to
know (at least I assume you'll be pleased) that version 1.1.1 will dispense
with (almost) all atempts to restrict the types of files that will appear
in the "Add..." dialog box. Instead, it'll display just about any file
that has a resource fork - this means you'll have to search through a lot
more irrelevant files when granting privileges, but folks won't have to be
aware of the option key trick anymore.

* If you've sent me mail that required a response, and haven't received one,
please send it again. I've been very clever lately and managed to lose
at least one piece of mail (Frank, are you out there?) and possibly others.
