[comp.sys.mac] Mailing Labels

sarrel@dinghy.cis.ohio-state.edu (Marc Sarrel) (04/19/89)

Last night I found out that Hypercard _stinks_ at generating a set of
mailing labels. I found two obvious bugs. I'm using the 11 x 3 sheet
of labels, with no spaces inbetween. Therefore, each label is 1" high
by 2.8333..." wide. I had Hypercard set up so that it thought there
were 11 labels vertically on the page and that each one was 1" high.
That's what the report dialog said. However, the addresses creeped up
higher on the labels as you went further down the page so that the
last row or two were unusable. And, Hypercard absolutely refused to
print more than four lines on any label in the first row.

So, is there a better mailing label program out there? Does anyone
know anything about a program called Fast Label?

thanks

As corresponding secretary of the San Pasqual (high school) Music
Boosters, I've been very pleased with the 116+ mailing labels/month I've
gotten out of FileMaker II, on 11 X 3 - wide seamless labels. I am using
an old IW-I to print the originals on blank stock perf-feed paper, then I
(pardon the name-drop) Xerox ea. page to as many copies of labels as I need.
There's a little time spent in setting up the first layout, but from
then-on, it's easy. I just space out the output from the IW to match up with
a blank page of labels, and there-I-go. The neat thing about using this data-
base is, you can keep it current with your membership, customize the output in
different layouts, and run lists in any format. Of course, it's easy for me
to say: I've been using FileMaker since it first came out years ago. I think
I'm using the Helevetica - 10 font, but I'm not sure & I don't have the data-
base here.
