Paged through the new MacWorld last night, and in the MacConnection Ad -- Randy Carr's NetTrek! You may remember, several years ago, that a very beta version was wandering around the net. Apparently the new version has 1-5 person play, digitized sound, and some VERY nice color. So, I called up MC this morning, and they said a) they ain't got it in yet and b) they don't know when. But I'll keep my eyes peeled... (Gads! What an expression!) Actually, it's been finished for months, but I haven't really put it to some acceptable testing until now. PBI Software, Inc has picked up the marketing rights and the program is called "NetTrek - The Real Version". NetTrek supports 6 players (i.e. you plus 5 opponents) across the AppleTalk network (sorry, no modem play w/o use of a Modem-AppleTalk-Modem driver - you wouldn't like the performance at 1200 baud (or even 9600 baud)). It runs on any Macintosh with 128K ROMs (sorry, I just couldn't support the old 64K stuff anymore). I've added color support with multi-colored ship icons, multi-finder support (it runs in the backround), regular menus (well, sort of...), and a full fledged single player mode that can be a challenging. You can also save the game (when playing single player) and actually disconnect yourself from the net (so the boss doesn't know). PBI Software, Inc. is planning a release in the near future (~2-3 weeks) as soon as the packaging is finished. Remember that the older 'beta' versions that found their way to the outside world are 'unreleased' versions and extremely buggy (actually the code is incredibly bad in those early versions). The good news is that for all of you honest people that 'registered' yourself before now are obligated by me to get a 'free' copy of NetTrek - The Real Version. I'm preparing a newsletter to each one of you as soon as I can get my act together. Sorry, but I can't give any 'free' copies to any new people wishing to 'register' themselves after today ( as that would be doing my own distribution which the distributors frown on). I thank everybody who has expressed interest in supporting and reporting bugs for the last 2 1/2 years and I really thank my 'registered' NetTrekkers for their patience about getting updates and support from me. Happy game playing... After all what else is a computer good for anyway? Randy Carr Network Systems Development Domain: carr@apple.com Apple Computer, Inc. Anybody out there particularly good at 3-D matrix processes for 3-D views, as I'd like to add some of this functionality for the future???
