Why does multifinder run out of memory when rebuilding the desktop? We have a Mac IIcx with an 80 Meg Hard disk and 4 MB ram. The regular finder rebuilds the desktop without any problems. Thanks, jim internet: loganj@yvax.byu.edu bitnet: loganj@byuvax

The Finder is just like any other application, and thus gets only as much memory as specified in it's get-info box... Two solutions: Set the Finder's MultiFinder memory higher by using "Get Info..." on the Finder in the System Folder (intersting point: The finder is really an application with a special type, but unlike other applications, it's SIZE resource can be get-info changed while it is running). Restart the machine and rebuild the desktop. Other: Only rebuild the desktop w/o running multifinder... You really shouldn't have to rebuild the desktop very often (I rebuild about once a month simply because I have a lot of stuff move through and the desktop gets a tad bit large)... This shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience. Notes: It might be a good idea to kick up the finder's partition a little bit anywyay; I have had it refuse to copy files because of lack of memory... During normal operation, the Finder shouldn't need much memory, though. Apple: When will the support for the new multifinder Temp calls be implimented in this very set of situations (copying, rebuild)? Next versions of Finder? Though so... :-) hope this helps... b.bum wb1j+@andrew.cmu.edu

System 6.0 or later only.

Third: Drop the Desktop manager into the System Folder, reboot, and
rebuild the damn Desktop file (files, now) One Last Time.

Especially if you allow it to open more windows at the same time.
(LAYO resource.) I set it to 240 kB habitually.

Rebuild currently creates a Huge Resource File, which uses up Lots Of Memory.
No way to put that into MF. Apple should better put the DTM into the System.
Copying already uses MF memory for the actual data of the files.

Same here.
